The Watts Towers Arts Center, located in the heart of Watts, provides a diverse array of tours, lectures, permanent and changing exhibitions for the public and offers classes for teachers and students in painting, sculpture, photography, music, dance, and multimedia arts. The Noah Purifoy Gallery is the home of the Center's changing exhibition program. The Howard Instrument Collection is housed in the Dr. Joseph & Bootsie Howard Gallery, is a permanent, revolving installation of musical instruments from around the world.
On last Saturday of September, the Center produces the Annual Watts Towers Day of the Drum Festival, dedicated to percussion and the traditional role of drumming in human societies. And on the last Sunday of September, thousands gather for the Annual Simon Rodia Watts Towers Jazz Festival, the oldest festival of its kind in Los Angeles, that pays tribute to the American music forms of Jazz, Gospel, and Blues and takes it to the Avant Garde and Latin Jazz Scene.
The Charles Mingus Youth Arts Center, named in honor of the renowned jazz bassist and visionary, is specifically dedicated to young people by expanding existing music classes offered through the Department of Cultural Affairs, and classes in art and media. The Mingus Gallery, located in the lobby, exhibits the work of our young students as well as local and international artists and serves as a performance space for theatrical readings and musical ensembles.
